Going into detail on what this term means and how it relates to health guidelines. This article may be incomplete.

Clinical trials often evaluate mortality differences between the studied intervention and "usual care." Total mortality is very difficult for any medical intervention to achieve in any disease entity. CV or cardiovascular mortality is considered a "hard" end point. Interventions that achieve CV mortality benefit in randomized clinical trials are statistically held in higher regard.
