The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the United States' primary agency for biomedical and public health research, acting as the federal focal point for health research. Its mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about living systems and apply it to improve health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. NIH is made up of 27 Institutes and Centers, each with a specific research focus.
